I had never read a historical fiction book taking place during World War II before. I'd say Between Shades of Gray has definitely sparked an interest in me. When we think of World War II, we think of Hitler and the holocaust. Between Shades of Gray speaks close to nothing about the topic. It speaks of innocent, peaceful people being ripped from their homes and families. Only to be transferred to various camps and prisons. The book speaks of sadness, truth, and death. There were times I found myself on Google Translate because I needed to know what a character in the book was saying because I just couldn't wait for them to tell me a few pages later. I would recommend this book to anybody would likes to lean forward, rushing to finish. Honestly, I can't even be mad at how the book ended. It leaves so much room for speculation and hope.
